It's been awhile hasn't it. Not to say I have not won, but more just being busy with summer, vacation and everything that occurs during the months of June-July.

But alas September is here and we're rolling into a new school year. I found myself at work around 7am the other morning and jumped on the opportunity to play a radio station game trivia game. These I tend to do well on. Not sure if it's that I have an ability to think quickly on the spot or I prep well for them. You chose the reason.

Anyhow, this past week I scored Jack Johnson tickets @ UCLA, 4 general admission seats. I was only expecting two! Thank you Jack, what a great show!!!

This was random. I think I entered a local newspaper contest for lottery tickets! Well low and behold, they delivered them this evening! Despite all the other life stuff going on, this was a really nice surprise to change up the pace!!!

My worst piece of furniture would have to be the first piece of furniture I purchased for my first apartment as a young adult!

When I first moved in, I had nothing at ALL! In fact, for months, I slept on the floor with some blankets as padding. I didn't feel that I needed a bed right away but then again, my budget would not cover anything over a couple hundred dollars. So I was limited!

Well, I was finally shamed into a purchase when my roommate brought over a date one night. Apparently, this guy turned out to not be so much a date for her as she tried to hook me up with him that night (besides the point). With all his charm, he insisted on seeing my room (despite my refusal, he pushed the door open and saw its bareness in all its glory).

He laughed and continued on about why I didn't have a bed for a good thirty mins (thank God I didn't at this point, last thing I'd want to do is pry him off my bed, considering he pushed his way into my room. Who knows what he'd do. PS if you are out there and reading this... that was just a really weird and creepy).

Alas, after that ordeal, I went out the following weekend and purchased my first, very own black metal framed FUTON! Despite its ugly looks, it served as a bed and couch (like) for a least a few years! I had to part with it when the frame got bent (too many moves, I was a gypsy in my early 20's).

I held on to the massive cushion for a year or so later too. I continued using it as a bed without the frame. I found it better that way, anyhow. With this experience, that is/was my worst piece of furniture. I did however enjoy many of the qualities and characteristics the mattress had, which I grew to love. Big enough for a few to sit on, soft and squishy!

With that said, this is why I'd love something as plush and wonderfully enveloping like the Love Sac in my house. I have been looking for that same wonderful cushion type furniture, that is better and bigger than a bean bag and not quite JUST a futon mattress! The Love Sac looks like I could get lost in it for days (just need to find the time to do that). Well if not for days, 30 mins at a time will do!

As I hit the half way mark in a few days, I thought about another type of contest entry; snail mail.

Over a year ago, I paid for an annual membership to a nice newsletter called 'Sweeping America'. They also had a Yahoo group to join for support. Their weekly newsletter was very nice and put together in an easy to use fashion. I liked the newsletters so much that I looked forward to getting them each week.

On a weekly basis, I'd scan through the contests, check off the ones I wanted to enter and sent in as many entries as possible.

The final results after an entire year of handwritten, snail mail entries, lots of stamps/envelopes? Zero... ...

I am not sure what is more sad. Watching Danny Bonaduce launder his personal and family issues on television or that even despite all that tv/counseling time, he and Gretchen have finally decided to call it quits.

More sad than that is the two children involved. Despite effort to keep their marriage together over the past several years, Danny announced today that he and Gretchen have filed for divorce.

Sit back and watch how this one plays out. According to an article on LA Times this afternoon, Danny was quoted saying, 'he is holding out hope for a reconciliation but also said that he had threatened to drag out the divorce until they were all penniless if she grew contentious during the split'. He later apologized. But as you may have seen from episodes of 'Breaking Bonaduce', he tends to rely heavily on making knee jerk emotional decisions as if he enjoyed the drama, which somehow may have validated his worth/role in the family.

No wonder Star 98.7 did not renew his contract or why a certain morning show did not run after him when he left. Right now, Danny is working on The Adam Carolla Show which started at the beginning of 2007.

The history, the roots of alternative music and radio, where has it gone? Remember when KROQ 106.7 was the preferred 'alternative' station for the greater Los Angeles area... Do you really... I do. And it is strange how KROQ has slowly evolved into this new hip, airbrushed, emo-screamo stylized top 40 music station. Before they had no real said guidelines for the types of music they had to play. In fact, you could call Richard, Poorman, or Heidi and ask for an older Depeche Mode, Cure, U2 non commercial song and at the time, they might actually play it if they felt like it. Now, if you called and asked them to play Depeche Mode, the intern just might not know who DM is. And all you 30 somethings know, this music is what built KROQ to be the station it is today. With this transgression away from the punk/alternative format (if there ever was one), 30 somethings now have nothing else to listen to on free radio besides what is being force feed to them on KROQ.

On a side note, making a more noteable change in path, MTV may have been the media that started this trend. They strayed from their original roots of 24/7 music videos to a new format of non-video television. And in the same vein, KROQ, has followed right behind by playing nothing remotely close to their original 'alternative' format.

Where has this left the die hard punks in Los Angeles. One unlikely station arose a few years ago and has remained a steadfast option to the mindless garbage played by the Clear Channel conglomerates.... Indie 103.1.

Some naysayers doubted the station could/would have lasted this long. But with names like Steve Jones, Nina Blackwood, and Dave Navarro hosting shows, who wouldn't listen? I have listened and I like what I hear. I hope they continue to support this format of good music and KROQ can continue to hand select music straight from INDIE's playlist...

....but we all know who played it first.

In between coughing fits today, I was able to control them long enough to look outside my office building and see this. This is actually the oppossite side of the mountain, but you get the idea.

Yes, the Hollywood Hillside near Forest Lawn was on F-I-R-E. There it was, a nice, big, dark plume of smoke engulfing most of the hillside around 2:30pm today. Luckily, it appeared to be in an area that did not have many homes.

Although, some of the major Los Angeles radio stations were down the street (well, actually, alot... mostly Clear Channels conglomerate stations located at Olive Ave)... they appeared to outside the ring of fire.

Down, down, down, and the flames went higher.... burn, burn, burn, that ring of fire, that ring of fire... yeah!

Just a bit of information about the win from last year. I have not had the chance to go since I received the certificate.

I did not receive the certificate until June of last year (I won the prize in February 2006). Which gave me 8 months to use instead of a full 12 mos. This expiration was for a full year after you receive it.

I contacted Four Seasons and told them of the delay and they are offering me an extension for a few months -- woo hoo. Thank you Four Seasons!

I can't wait to use this one. The Four Seasons in Scottsdale looks gorgeous and relaxing... Can't wait!

They've pulled in two unusual Clear Channel DJ's. Lisa Foxx (Former side kick to Ryan Seacrest's ride home afternoon shift) and Valentine (Formerly of KIIS FM fame) have taken over. Or have they. Both these DJ's are far more suitable for the afternoon drive home or evening shows. They don't seem to have enough perk for a morning show in Los Angeles. But what do I know. Let's see how long they keep them there.

Star 98.7 wants to try something new. Something entirely new for the radio station that is.

As of April 14, 2006, Star 98.7's airwaves have been quiet with only music playing. This is a bit unusual as just a week prior, there were dj's hosting at least 4 different slots during the day.

Now, because of mass emailing and online petitions, they have decided to give their morning trio (Jamie, Jack & Stench) one last chance. Now, it is up to the listeners to save their favorite L.A. morning dj's.

Can they do it? Or will these dj's just become another blip on the Clear Channel map?

If you had not heard yet: All the clear channel stations are requesting that people not share bonus point information with others. I find this really kind of crazy. Especially, since I never really end up winning anything in the "Up for Grabs" section. By the time it is posted, it is gone!

Technically these prizes are free. These are prizes they used to give away randomly. Now they save the larger ones for onair giveaways. And they make us go through the hoops of entering in codes -- that we listen for all day (most of us that is and then to get shut down because they get picked up so quickly when they release them.

And to top it off, they want to tell us not to share codes. When all we do is talk about their radio station crap all day long...

Heck, I say we go back to the old way of calling in for these and cut out all these password, bonus code, click-thru, special event bs...

oh, hold on, I have to put another code in...

I feel like we're on the island with the LOST cast, entering in codes all day. For what? For the machine to not count down to zero. boop ... beep ... boop.

Listening from your PC to streaming radio? This may be the very reason why you are not winning or getting through on the phone lines.

You may already know that streaming radio has a buffering delay. But for those who do not know, you may be surprised to hear this.

There you are sitting, waiting all day for the next chance to win XXXXX prize, and then they announce it and the freaking lines are busy. What the F*ck. How is this possible? Well are you listening from your PC at work or home? If you want to increase your odds at winning, perhaps you better stick with the old radio.

Streaming radio buffering is part of the problem. Depending on your delay due to streaming, internet speed, and other disturbances on your connection; you could be anywhere from 5-15+ seconds behind the regular radio listener. This could have its advantages but in most cases not.

If the standard radio giveaway is for caller 20, a ten second delay could significantly lower your odds of even getting in at all. I know it seems pretty random, however, mathmatically this factor will decrease your chances.

Until internet streaming radio can load without the delay as explained by Star 987's site, my suggestion would be to invest in a small desktop, portable radio.

Question: Why am I hearing your stream on a delay from the over the air broadcasts?
Answer: We send our over the air signal to a streaming company who then processes it and sends it out over the internet. This creates some delay. More delay is caused intentionally to allow the tuner a “buffer” which picks up scrambled bits and bites and then reassembles them so that it sounds as if nothing has been missed in the process. In other words, it creates less drop-out this way. Yes – it does make it tough to play some contests when a delay is involved. We are aware of this, but at this time, there's not much we can do about it. Also, to be eligible to participate in a multi-market contest you must be listening to a Clear Channel radio station originating in the Total Survey Area of the market you reside.
